As a licensed mental health provider for over 20 years, I have been fortunate to work with clients in all stages of life to help them not only strengthen their mental health but also accomplish personal, educational and professional goals. I believe strongly that our most important life achievements can only be attained when our emotions are steady, our thoughts are reality-based, and our self esteem declares that we are worthy of success. While I see clients from adolescence on, I find that therapy with young adults can be particularly impactful given the huge personal growth and multitude of important (and sometimes overwhelming) decisions that accompany this life stage.
Collaboration is the key to success in therapy. While I have therapeutic skills and know-how, you are the expert on you. Further, given that everyone is different (and thankfully so!), not all coping skills and techniques will be beneficial to everyone. I value trial and error and ask for my clients' patience and willingness to step outside their comfort zone to try new behaviors. It's my job to validate and celebrate every step you take, knowing personally how difficult change can be.
Our sessions will be a conversation about you, your goals, and what may be blocking you from achieving them. In our first meeting, we will discuss what brought you into therapy and what you want to get from seeing a therapist. I can assist with the latter part, so no worries if you are mostly focused on the problem at this point. Sometimes, we are engulfed in our pain and cannot see a way out. This is when therapy can be helpful, if not life-saving. I will always provide a fresh perspective while also validating your experiences. I believe that often we can be doing the best that we can while at the same time finding that our best just isn't good enough. I have found myself in this situation more than once and learned that only by acquiring insights and skills can we reach new heights.
