Great to meet you!

You’ve already taken one of the hardest steps by being here. Welcome.

I am Dr. Maria Amarante, a bilingual (English/Spanish) therapist specializing in trauma-informed care, substance use disorders, partner violence, and high-risk behaviors. I work with adolescents, adults, couples, and families navigating the impact of trauma, addiction, relationship challenges, emotional dysregulation, anxiety, depression, and life stressors.

I hold a doctoral degree in Educational Psychology and have significant training in trauma-informed care and addiction treatment. I also have extensive experience serving diverse populations with complex clinical needs across community mental health and outpatient treatment settings, including extensive work with incarcerated youth and adult populations. My work is deeply rooted in helping individuals better understand the connection between trauma, behavior, emotions, relationships, and survival responses.

As a bilingual clinician, I value providing accessible and culturally sensitive care to both English- and Spanish-speaking individuals and families.

Whether you are working through trauma, substance use concerns, relationship difficulties, or major life transitions, therapy can be a powerful step toward healing, growth, and reclaiming your sense of self.

My approach to therapy

Healing begins within a safe, compassionate, and nonjudgmental therapeutic relationship. My approach is collaborative, culturally responsive, and focused on meeting clients where they are. I am passionate about supporting individuals who may feel stuck in survival mode, overwhelmed by painful experiences, uncertain about how to move forward, or disconnected from themselves and others.

As someone with personal insight into the impact of partner violence and trauma recovery, I understand the importance of rebuilding safety, trust, and emotional stability throughout the healing process.

Many clients appreciate my down-to-earth and authentic approach to therapy, which helps create a space where they feel comfortable being themselves.

In therapy, I integrate trauma-informed interventions with practical coping strategies to help clients build insight, emotional safety, healthier relationships, and long-term stability. My goal is to create a space where clients feel heard, respected, empowered, and supported throughout the healing process.

I understand that beginning therapy can feel vulnerable, and I strive to create an environment where clients feel comfortable exploring their experiences at their own pace.

What you can expect from me

Clients can expect their first session with me to be a supportive, judgment-free space focused on getting to know them beyond just symptoms or diagnoses. I understand that starting therapy can feel uncomfortable, emotional, or even intimidating, so my goal is to help clients feel safe, heard, and respected from the very beginning.

During our first session, we will explore what brings you to therapy, the challenges you may currently be facing, and the goals you hope to work toward. I also take time to understand important parts of your personal story, including past experiences, relationships, stressors, strengths, and coping patterns. There is no pressure to share everything at once — therapy is a process, and we move at a pace that feels emotionally safe and manageable.

Clients are also encouraged to share what has or has not felt helpful in past therapy experiences, as I believe understanding previous experiences with treatment can help us build a stronger and more effective therapeutic relationship. I welcome questions about my therapeutic approach, style, and the way I work so that clients can feel informed, comfortable, and actively involved in the therapy process.

Clients often describe me as down-to-earth, genuine, and easy to talk to. I believe in creating a collaborative environment where clients can show up authentically without fear of judgment. My approach balances compassion with honesty, support, and practical tools that can help clients begin building insight, emotional safety, and stability.

Whether you are seeking support for trauma, substance use, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or life transitions, the first session is an opportunity for us to begin building trust and determining how therapy can best support your healing and growth.
