Mary McMahon

I'm Mary Frances McMahon, a licensed clinical social worker with over 35 years of experience — and I've spent most of that time sitting with people in their hardest chapters. Grief. Trauma. Relationship breakdown. Identity questions. Addiction recovery. Life transitions that upend everything you thought you knew about yourself. I trained at NYU School of Social Work and I hold a certification from the American Board of Clinical Sex Therapists — one of the few in New York. I work with adults and seniors, and I bring genuine curiosity, warmth, and honesty to every session. I see clients virtually across New York State.

My approach is integrative, which means I don't have a single script. I draw on psychodynamic and Jungian frameworks, solution-focused techniques, and body-mind awareness depending on what you need and where you are in your process. I believe the relationship between therapist and client is itself part of the healing — and I take that seriously. I will challenge you when it's useful. I will also sit with you in the uncertainty when that's what's needed. What I won't do is rush you toward an answer before you're ready.

Our first session is a real conversation. I'll ask what brought you in, what you've already tried, and what better actually looks like for you. I won't hand you a questionnaire and disappear into my notes. By the end of that first hour, you'll have a genuine sense of whether working together is the right fit — and I'll give you an honest picture of what our work might look like going forward.
