Great to meet you!

I’m Dr. Matthew Brinkley (PsyD, LMFT), a licensed marriage and family therapist, dating and relationship coach, and educator based in Los Angeles. I work primarily with LGBTQ+ individuals—especially gay, queer, and folks of color—who want deeper, more fulfilling relationships with themselves and others.

Clients often describe me as direct, thoughtful, and grounding, with a sense of humor that makes hard conversations feel more approachable. I believe therapy should feel collaborative, culturally responsive, and practical—not intimidating or overly clinical. My goal is to help you better understand yourself, build emotional regulation skills, and make intentional changes that actually translate into your day-to-day life.

My approach to therapy

My approach is relational, insight-oriented, and skills-based. I draw from attachment theory, emotion-focused therapy (EFT), cognitive-behavioral strategies, and sex-positive frameworks to help clients understand why certain patterns show up—and how to change them.

I strongly believe clients already have inner intelligence and resilience; therapy is about helping you access it. Sessions are collaborative and active, and I often encourage reflection or small practices between sessions to support growth outside the therapy room. I specialize in working with dating anxiety, relationship patterns, attachment styles, sexual shame, identity exploration, non-monogamy, and navigating intimacy within queer and marginalized communities.

What you can expect from me

Your first session is focused on understanding you—your goals, your concerns, and what’s bringing you to therapy right now. We’ll talk about your relationship history, emotional patterns, and what you hope will feel different in your life or relationships.

You can expect a supportive but honest conversation, where you’re not rushed or judged. I’ll ask thoughtful questions, reflect patterns I notice, and help us begin shaping clear goals for our work together. Many clients leave the first session feeling more grounded, validated, and clearer about their next steps.
