Great to meet you!

You don't have to keep feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like no one truly understands how your mind works. Whether you're navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, autism, or the weight of everyday stress. Relief is possible, and you don't have to figure it out alone.

I'm Matt Tapia, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), licensed in Arizona and California. What makes my approach different is that I bring together two distinct disciplines: the relational depth of individual and family therapy, and the science-backed precision of behavioral analysis. That means I don't just help you process how you feel. I help you understand the patterns driving your behavior and give you practical, evidence-based tools to shift them.

I work with children, teens, adults, and families, and I specialize in neurodivergent-affirming care. If you or someone you love is autistic, has ADHD, or simply experiences the world differently, my practice is a space where that is honored, not treated as a problem to fix. I also support caregivers, people navigating life transitions, relationship challenges, depression, PTSD, and chronic stress.

My approach draws on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness, and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Every session is tailored to you to be collaborative, compassionate, and always at your pace. Healing looks different for everyone, and I honor that.

All sessions are conducted online via secure telehealth, making expert, insurance-friendly therapy accessible wherever you are in Arizona or California, no commute, no waiting room, just support that fits your life.

You deserve to feel heard, not judged. If you're ready to take that first step, reach out today. I'd love to connect.

My approach to therapy

My approach is integrative, evidence-based, and always tailored to you. There is no one-size-fits-all model in my practice, the most effective therapy adapts to the person, not the other way around.

I draw from a toolkit of proven, research-backed modalities blended to fit your unique needs:

ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) is my primary approach, helping you stop fighting painful thoughts and move toward a life guided by your values, not your fears. Especially powerful for anxiety, depression, trauma, and neurodivergent clients.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) identifies and restructures the thought patterns fueling anxiety, depression, and stress, providing practical, immediately applicable skills.

DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) builds concrete skills in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness, particularly effective for mood disorders and relationship challenges.

ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) brings behavioral science precision into therapy, understanding the function behind behaviors and creating measurable, lasting change, especially for neurodivergent clients and families.

Motivational Interviewing helps resolve ambivalence about change so that motivation comes from within, not from outside pressure.

At the foundation of everything is a collaborative, person-centered approach. Therapy is something we do together, at your pace, honoring your experience, without judgment.

What you can expect from me

Our first session is about one thing: making you feel safe, heard, and genuinely hopeful about what comes next. There is no performance required, no need to have everything figured out, and absolutely no judgment. You just show up as you are and we take it from there.

We will begin by exploring what is bringing you to therapy right now. Whether that is anxiety that will not quiet down, depression that makes it hard to get through the day, ADHD or autism-related challenges, trauma that keeps surfacing, relationship difficulties, a major life transition, or something you have not yet found the words for. This is a space where all of it is welcome.

I will share a bit about who I am, how I work, and what my therapeutic style looks like in practice, including how ACT, CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and behavioral science inform our sessions, so you can decide whether I feel like the right fit. I encourage you to ask any questions you have. There are no wrong questions.

We will also take care of the important groundwork that makes therapy safe and effective, including informed consent, confidentiality and its limits, the risks and benefits of therapy, and what to expect going forward in terms of session structure and progress.

By the end of our first session, my goal is for you to leave feeling clearer, less alone, and genuinely optimistic about what is possible. You do not need a diagnosis, a perfectly articulated problem, or any prior therapy experience. All you need is a willingness to show up and I will meet you the rest of the way.

Ready to take that first step? Reach out today to schedule your first session. Online therapy available to clients across Arizona and California. Insurance accepted.
