Great to meet you!

Welcome! I'm Maxwell Whitson, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) dedicated to helping adults navigate life's challenges with compassion, understanding, and evidence-based care. I earned my Master of Social Work from the University of West Florida and have experience providing individual and group therapy in outpatient mental health settings, working with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, stress, and life transitions.

My therapeutic approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and tailored to each client's unique needs. I integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based interventions, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). As an EMDR-trained clinician, I help clients process distressing experiences while building practical skills to improve emotional well-being and resilience.

As a veteran, I have a special passion for working with veterans, active-duty service members, first responders, and anyone recovering from trauma or navigating major life changes. I also enjoy helping individuals manage anxiety, depression, burnout, grief, relationship concerns, and challenges with emotional regulation.

I believe that therapy should be a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where you feel heard, respected, and empowered. Whether you're seeking relief from overwhelming emotions, healing from past experiences, or working toward personal growth, my goal is to help you build the insight, confidence, and coping skills needed to create meaningful, lasting change. I look forward to partnering with you on your journey toward improved mental health and well-being.

My approach to therapy

I believe the foundation of effective therapy is a strong, trusting relationship where clients feel safe, heard, and understood. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and goal-oriented. I work alongside clients to identify their strengths, better understand the challenges they are facing, and develop practical strategies that promote meaningful and lasting change.

I use an integrative, evidence-based approach, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based interventions, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). As an EMDR-trained therapist, I help clients process traumatic experiences and reduce the impact of distressing memories while building resilience and emotional well-being.

I specialize in working with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, stress, grief, life transitions, and emotional regulation difficulties. I also have a special interest in supporting veterans, first responders, and individuals navigating the unique challenges associated with military service and high-stress careers. My goal is to create a nonjudgmental environment where clients feel empowered to gain insight, develop healthy coping skills, and move toward a more balanced and fulfilling life.

What you can expect from me

During our first session, my priority is creating a safe, welcoming, and nonjudgmental environment where you feel comfortable sharing your story at your own pace. We will discuss what has brought you to therapy, explore your current concerns, review relevant personal and mental health history, and identify your strengths, goals, and what you hope to achieve through treatment.

Together, we will develop a personalized treatment plan that reflects your unique needs and values. My approach is collaborative and practical, incorporating evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based interventions, and EMDR when clinically appropriate. I believe therapy should be tailored to the individual, and I strive to provide a compassionate, trauma-informed space where clients feel heard, respected, and supported.

By the end of our first session, you can expect to have a clearer understanding of the therapeutic process, initial goals for treatment, and a plan for moving forward together at a pace that feels comfortable and meaningful to you.
