Great to meet you!

You're functioning, showing up, and handling what needs to be handled, but your mind and body rarely clock out.

You might be replaying a conversation hours after it ended, preparing for what could go wrong, adjusting to a loss everyone else seems to have moved on from, or keeping track of everyone else's needs while your own get pushed aside.

I'm Melissa Parrish, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) providing online therapy for adults across New Jersey. I specialize in grief, anxiety, chronic stress, and working with parents, caregivers, neurodivergent adults, and first responders and their spouses.

That might mean helping a parent who's spent years advocating for their child, a caregiver managing appointments and medical uncertainty, or someone whose family life revolves around shift work and unpredictable schedules. Different circumstances, but often a similar experience: you've gotten very good at adapting, and it's taking more out of you than most people realize.

I hold specialized credentials in autism spectrum disorders (ASDCS), clinical trauma (CCTP), and grief counseling (CGP).

My work focuses on helping you move beyond just pushing through, so handling what life asks of you doesn't take everything you've got.

My approach to therapy

You can understand why you're anxious and still find yourself replaying the conversation. You can know you need a break and still feel responsible for everything. You can recognize that you're exhausted and have no idea what you could realistically take off your plate.

Therapy with me goes beyond understanding what's happening. We'll look at the patterns keeping you stuck in that cycle, how they developed, and what it would take to respond differently without pretending the demands of your life are going to disappear.

My approach is practical, collaborative, and tailored to you. I draw from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), person-centered and humanistic therapy, mindfulness, and nervous system regulation work. We connect what's happening in your thoughts, body, relationships, and daily life rather than treating each as a separate issue.

Some sessions focus on processing grief or experiences you've had little room to address. Others involve examining the expectations you hold yourself to, recognizing when your body is staying on alert, or practicing ways to handle difficult situations without carrying them long after they're over.

The goal isn't to give you another list of things to manage. It's to help you make changes that hold up under the actual pressures of your life.

What you can expect from me

Our first session is a chance to understand what brought you here and what life has been looking like for you lately.

I'll ask about what you're currently dealing with, relevant parts of your history, how things have been affecting you, and what you've already tried. We'll also talk about what you'd like to be different and what you're hoping to get out of therapy.

You don't need to have a clear explanation of what's wrong. Maybe you know exactly what's been happening, but can't figure out how to change it. Maybe you've been so focused on keeping everything running that you haven't had much opportunity to consider how you're actually doing.

We'll take time to understand the bigger picture, including the responsibilities, relationships, and circumstances that shape your day-to-day life. I don't want to give you strategies that sound good in a therapy session but aren't realistic when you get home.

By the end of our first meeting, we'll begin identifying what needs attention and discuss how we might approach our work together. You'll also have time to ask questions and decide whether working with me feels like a good fit.
