Great to meet you!

Hello! I'm Michael Nguyen, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner dedicated to helping individuals navigate their mental health journey with compassion and evidence-based care.

I earned my Master of Science in Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), specializing in psychiatric mental health. My foundation in psychology from UC San Diego, combined with my nursing training, allows me to approach mental health from both a scientific and deeply humanistic perspective.

Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with diverse populations across the San Francisco Bay Area. I specialize in treating individuals with treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD, and ADHD. I have extensive experience providing care to those with complex mental illness and substance use disorders, having worked in community mental health settings where I supported some of our most vulnerable populations.

My expertise includes traditional medication management and psychotherapy, as well as innovative treatments like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and esketamine (Spravato) for treatment-resistant depression. I'm committed to cultural humility and destigmatizing mental health challenges, ensuring every client feels respected and understood.

Before becoming a nurse practitioner, I worked as a medical scribe and performance improvement coordinator, which taught me the importance of clear communication and patient-centered care. I believe in meeting people where they are and collaborating with them to find the path forward that works best for their unique circumstances. I've also worked extensively with LGBTQ+ youth and individuals from marginalized communities, and I understand the unique challenges that systemic barriers can create in accessing quality mental health care. I stay current through continuing education to provide the highest quality care.

My approach to therapy

My approach to care centers on collaboration, respect, and evidence-based treatment. You bring expertise about your own experience, and I serve as your partner and advocate throughout your mental health journey. I work from a cultural humility framework, recognizing that each person brings unique backgrounds, perspectives, and strengths to the process. I create a safe, nonjudgmental environment where you can discuss your struggles openly and free from shame or stigma.

In my clinical practice, I incorporate behavioral health strategies and motivational principles, using a stages-of-change model to meet you exactly where you are in your readiness for treatment. I treat the whole person rather than symptoms alone, taking into account your physical health, life circumstances, and personal aspirations when developing your individualized treatment plan.

When it comes to medication management, I take a thoughtful and collaborative approach. I am a strong advocate for deprescribing when appropriate, because sometimes fewer medications lead to better outcomes. I invest time in explaining all available treatment options, potential benefits, and side effects so you have the information you need to make confident, well-informed decisions. I provide patient education that is tailored to your specific situation and comprehension level, because mental health care works best when you feel genuinely empowered and informed. I welcome your questions and sincerely value your feedback throughout our work together.

I believe in mutual respect between patients and providers. You deserve compassionate, personalized care that honors your dignity and autonomy at every step. I coordinate with other members of your care team when it is beneficial and am experienced in both in-person and telehealth settings, delivering quality care in whatever format suits you best.

You are not alone in this journey, and together we will work toward meaningful healing and growth.

What you can expect from me

Your first appointment is focused on getting to know one another and understanding what brings you to seek care. I aim to create a comfortable, conversational atmosphere where you feel genuinely heard and respected from the very start.

We will begin by discussing what prompted you to reach out. I will ask about your current challenges, how long they have been present, and how they are affecting your daily life, including work, relationships, sleep, and overall functioning. We will review your mental health history, including past treatments and medications, exploring what proved helpful and what did not. I will also gather information about your physical health, family background, and current life circumstances, as these provide important context for developing your plan of care.

We will discuss your treatment goals and what you hope to accomplish through our work together. The more I understand about the full scope of your life and experiences, the better positioned I am to offer care that is truly meaningful and personalized to you.

This first appointment is as much an opportunity for you to evaluate whether we are a good fit as it is for me to conduct a thorough assessment. Please feel free to ask about my approach, my experience, or anything else that would help you feel more comfortable and confident moving forward.

By the end of our session, we will collaboratively develop an initial treatment plan, which may include medication recommendations, lifestyle modifications, or referrals to additional resources. Nothing moves forward without your active participation and informed consent. Sessions are available both in person and through telehealth, and everything we discuss remains confidential within ethical and legal guidelines. Bringing past records or a medication list is helpful but not required.

I look forward to meeting you and beginning this work together with compassion and genuine commitment to your well-being.
