Great to meet you!

Hello! I'm Misty Ornelas Thompson, a Licensed Professional Counselor. As a San Antonio native, my journey into counseling was deeply influenced by my own positive experiences in therapy. I earned my Master of Education degree in School Counseling from Our Lady of the Lake University in 2011.

For the past 11 years, I've had the privilege of working with at-risk youth and adults in various school settings, which has provided me with extensive exposure to a wide range of mental health issues and diagnoses. Currently, I work at Evolucion Counseling and in both a public high school and a mental health hospital.

My passion lies in helping people navigate the complexities of life. I truly believe in the power of sharing life experiences and guiding clients through their unique challenges.

My Areas of Special Interest:

I have a special interest in supporting clients with:

  • Anxiety (generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic)
  • Depression
  • Grief and loss
  • Adjusting to chronic illness and complex medical issues
  • Life transitions (e.g., empty nest, career change, relationship status, etc.)
  • PTSD
  • Stress and burnout
  • Cross-cultural issues
  • General well-being

I look forward to the possibility of working with you!

A bit about my approach to therapy

My Therapeutic Approach: Crafting a Path Just for You

My approach to therapy isn't about fitting you into a pre-made box; it's about crafting a path that's as unique as you are. While I'm deeply trained in powerful, evidence-based modalities like Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Impact Therapy, and Sand Tray Therapy, these are just the starting points. Think of them as the foundational tools in my toolkit.

What makes our work together truly effective is my commitment to tailoring a treatment plan specifically for your therapeutic needs and goals. We'll collaboratively explore which methods and interventions resonate most with you, ensuring our sessions feel meaningful and effective. Whether we're exploring thought patterns with CBT, building coping skills with DBT, using creative and engaging techniques from Impact Therapy, or delving into deeper insights through the symbolic world of Sand Tray, every session is designed with your progress in mind.

Beyond specific techniques, you'll find that I am a passionate LGBTQIA+ ally, committed to creating a safe, affirming, and understanding space for everyone. I approach every client with cultural sensitivity, respecting and integrating your unique background, values, and experiences into our therapeutic journey. My goal is to foster an environment where you feel truly seen, heard, and empowered to navigate life's challenges and achieve lasting well-being.

What you can expect from our first session

When you work with me, you'll leave with more than just conversation; you'll gain practical strategies and insights for real-life change. Expect to:

  • Receive Actionable Tools: Learn concrete skills from approaches like CBT and DBT to manage anxiety, navigate emotions, and build stronger relationships. You'll apply these directly to your daily life.
  • Deepen Self-Awareness: Explore your thoughts, emotions, and patterns through techniques like Impact Therapy and Sand Tray Therapy, empowering you to make intentional choices.
  • Navigate Life's Transitions: Develop resilience and adaptability to handle career changes, relationship shifts, or health challenges with greater ease and confidence.
  • Strengthen Relationships (Especially for Couples): If you're a couple, discover new ways to communicate effectively and build a more fulfilling partnership.
  • Experience a Safe & Affirming Space: As an LGBTQIA+ ally who practices with cultural sensitivity, you'll find a non-judgmental environment where your unique identity is respected and celebrated.
  • Cultivate Hope and Clarity: Work collaboratively with me to navigate life's complexities, fostering a sense of purpose and overall well-being.

My goal is for you to leave feeling empowered, understood, and equipped to live a more fulfilling and authentic life.
