Great to meet you!

I earned my PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Florida and received clinical training in hospital and college counseling settings at the University of Florida, Northwestern University, and New College of Florida. I specialize in individual therapy with adults in their 20s, 30s, and 40s struggling with anxiety, OCD, trauma responses, adjustment stress, or identity struggles that make it difficult to balance the many demands of modern life.

As adults in this society, the pressures of adjusting to life changes, both expected and unexpected, and living up to the expectations of ourselves and others can feel overwhelming. This often results in perfectionism, low self-confidence, relationship difficulties, work difficulties, loss of meaning, depression, or burnout. Therapy can be a helpful way to address this.

My approach to therapy

As your therapist, I will work with you to establish a warm and affirming rapport, process emotions and experiences, expand coping skills, challenge unhelpful patterns, and connect with core values, strengths, and a deeper understanding of self. My intention is to support you in developing the tools, insight, and self-confidence you need to reach your wellness goals and live a more fulfilling life.

I work to tailor my approach to your unique goals while also affirming your culture and values. I integrate evidence-based frameworks including ACT, CBT, Existential/Humanistic, Psychodynamic/Relational, and Somatic/Mindfulness-Based approaches. I also specialize in adjustment/identity concerns in young adults and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD.

What you can expect from me

When working with a new a client, I perform an initial assessment to understand your unique concerns, history, strengths, and goals. This helps me to tailor my approach to best fit your needs. The first session is also a time to build initial rapport. I take care to understand your individual and cultural values to do my best to create a space where you feel safe to be your authentic self.

I understand that searching for a new therapist might bring feelings of anxiety or uncertainty. For many, though, overcoming that initial hurtle to begin therapy can lead to a rewarding experience and significant personal growth. If you feel that we might be a good fit to work together, or if you have questions for me, I encourage you to book an initial consultation call.

If none of the available times listed here work for you, feel free to also reach out through my website: www.drnicholasgensmer.com
