The Mind Behind the Athlete

Supporting the Person Behind the Performance

I'm Nikkida, a Licensed Professional Counselor with over a decade of experience helping individuals build resilience, strengthen emotional well-being, and navigate life's challenges. Today, my practice is dedicated to supporting elite athletes of all ages, including youth, collegiate, professional, and nationally competitive athletes.

Elite athletes compete in environments that demand excellence, discipline, and resilience. While success in sport often highlights physical ability and achievement, the mental and emotional demands behind high-level performance can be just as challenging. The pressure to succeed, recover from setbacks, maintain confidence, and consistently perform at a high level can impact every aspect of an athlete's life.

Whether you're navigating performance anxiety, perfectionism, injury recovery, burnout, identity challenges, confidence concerns, or the pressures of balancing sport with academics, career, family, and personal responsibilities, you don't have to face those challenges alone.

I specialize in helping athletes manage anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, ADHD, stress, behavioral challenges, life transitions, and the unique psychological demands of competitive sports. My approach focuses on helping athletes better understand what is happening beneath the surface, strengthen emotional regulation, develop effective coping strategies, and build the mindset necessary to thrive both in competition and in life.

Whether you're preparing for your next season, overcoming a performance plateau, recovering from an injury, transitioning to a new level of competition, or working through challenges beyond your sport, I provide a supportive and collaborative space where mental wellness and peak performance can grow together.

My approach to therapy

I take a collaborative, goal-oriented, and athlete-centered approach to therapy. My work is designed to help elite athletes strengthen their mental and emotional well-being while navigating the unique demands of high-level competition.

Together, we'll explore the connection between your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, performance, and relationships to identify patterns that may be impacting your success both in and out of sport. I integrate evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR-informed interventions, trauma-focused strategies, and strength-based techniques to support growth, resilience, and lasting change.

As an athlete, you may face challenges such as performance anxiety, perfectionism, injury recovery, burnout, confidence issues, identity concerns, life transitions, or balancing the demands of sport with everyday life. My role is to provide a supportive space where you can develop greater self-awareness, improve emotional regulation, strengthen coping skills, and build the mental tools needed to perform at your highest level.

Therapy with me is both reflective and practical. While we work to understand the deeper factors influencing your thoughts, emotions, and performance, we also focus on actionable strategies you can apply immediately in competition, training, relationships, and daily life. My goal is to help you develop the mindset, resilience, and confidence necessary to thrive not only as an athlete, but as a person.

My philosophy is simple: when the person behind the performance is supported, peak performance becomes more sustainable.

What you can expect from me

Our first session is an opportunity to get to know you beyond your role as an athlete and understand what has brought you to therapy at this point in your journey. We'll discuss the challenges you're facing, what feels most important right now, and what you hope to gain from our work together.

You don't need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. Many athletes come into counseling feeling overwhelmed by performance pressures, struggling with confidence, navigating injury recovery, experiencing burnout, or trying to balance the demands of sport with other areas of life. Wherever you are, we'll start there.

Together, we'll explore the factors impacting your mental and emotional well-being while identifying strengths that can support your growth both in and out of competition. Over time, clients often experience greater emotional regulation, increased self-awareness, improved confidence, healthier coping strategies, stronger resilience, and a more balanced relationship with their sport and overall well-being.

My goal is not perfection. My goal is to help you develop the tools, insight, and support needed to navigate challenges with greater clarity, confidence, and stability.

Whether you're working through performance anxiety, a setback, a major transition, or the everyday pressures of being a high-performing athlete, I would be honored to support you in building the mental strength and emotional resilience needed to thrive both as an athlete and as a person.
