Great to meet you!

After earning a bachelor's in psychology at George Mason University, Patricia Roy played guitar and sang in indie pop bands. In the basement of her house, outside Washington D.C., she built a studio, recording her own music as well as that of other local indie musicians in the ‘90s.

Dr. Roy became fascinated with nutrition and its effect on mood, and upon extensive research, she decided the most genuine way for her to connect with people, which she loved most about music, would be through medicine. At the age of twenty-six, she applied to medical school.

Dr. Roy received her Doctor of Medicine at Drexel University in Philadelphia, worked as a research fellow in the Psychiatry Department at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and then as a physician in that same department. She became the medical director of the Virginia Hospital Center’s Behavioral Health before joining William & Mary University as its first full-time psychiatrist.

Today, Dr. Roy proudly offers her patients services through her own private practice. With Verita, Dr. Roy continues to build on her belief that psychiatric care should be truly personal and a collaboration between herself and her patient.

My approach to therapy

As a relational psychiatrist trained at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with 20 years of experience I combine strong evidence-based medical expertise with a deep focus on understanding the whole person. My approach includes emphasizes building a trusting therapeutic relationship, exploring how past experiences and current relationships influence emotional well-being, and integrating psychotherapy, medication, and lifestyle factors when appropriate. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, I will work collaboratively with patients to understand the underlying causes of distress, identify strengths and patterns, and develop a personalized treatment plan that supports both symptom relief and long-term emotional growth.

What you can expect from me

In our first visit, you can expect a thoughtful, collaborative conversation focused on understanding you as a whole person—not just your symptoms. We'll discuss your current concerns, personal history, relationships, life experiences, strengths, and goals for treatment. Drawing on my training and years of clinical experience, I take a relational and evidence-based approach, seeking to understand the factors contributing to your difficulties while building a trusting therapeutic relationship. Together, we'll develop an individualized plan that may include psychotherapy, medication, lifestyle interventions, or other supports, depending on your needs and preferences.
