Great to meet you!

I’m Phelan Dickerson (pronounced Fay-len), a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Sam Houston State University and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Texas A&M University–Commerce. I specialize in working with complex and often stigmatized issues, including addiction (substance and behavioral), Borderline Personality disorder, sexual trauma and sexual behavior concerns, emotional dysregulation, psychosis, autism, and mood disorders such as bipolar disorder. I’m extensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), the gold standard treatment for emotional dysregulation, borderline personality disorder, and bipolar disorder. DBT helps clients build a life worth living through mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

I work particularly well with resistant patients who struggle with enacting life-style changes. I am fully trained and certified in SMART Recovery and strive to help patients take responsibility for their lives by learning relapse prevention and address substance and behavioral addictions including gambling, porn, spending, and sex addictions. I also have experience working with sexual deviancy in both adolescents and adults. And i have extensive experience working with patients involved in the criminal justice system including parolees and those facing violent criminal charges.

My approach to therapy

My therapeutic style is compassionate, challenging, direct, and grounded in trauma-informed, evidence-based care. I back up what i teach with research and incorporate radical autonomy, and personal accountability in therapy. Together, these perspectives help clients move toward inner peace, self-trust, and meaningful change. I believe therapy should be a judgment-free space to explore even the most vulnerable and complex parts of yourself. My role is not to “fix” you but to help you see your patterns clearly, reclaim ownership of your experiences, and take concrete steps toward lasting growth.

What you can expect from me

At the core of my work is a belief: if you want to change the world, start by helping the people in it. I strive to be a safe, steady guide for my clients as they do the hard work of healing, growth, and change—so they can go forward and make their own mark on the world.

In our sessions, you can expect a safe, nonjudgmental, and collaborative space where your story is heard and validated. My goal is to help you gain practical coping strategies, emotional regulation skills, and deeper self-awareness so you can navigate life’s challenges with more confidence and clarity. We’ll work together to uncover patterns that may be holding you back, strengthen your boundaries, and build resilience in both your personal and professional life. You can expect to leave each session with a clearer sense of direction, actionable tools you can use immediately, and a growing belief in your ability to create lasting change.
