Great to meet you!

Something in your life isn't working, and you already know it. Maybe it's the anxiety that won't quit, a relationship stuck in the same painful loop, or a habit you keep promising yourself you'll quit. You're not here because you're weak, you're here because you're finally ready.

I'm Rebecca Ward, a licensed therapist with over 18 years of experience working with adults through some of life's hardest moments: trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship patterns that keep repeating, and addiction that's never really just about the substance.

My approach is direct, warm, and built around you specifically. No generic treatment plans. I draw heavily from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), one of the most evidence-based approaches available, which is especially effective if you struggle with intense emotions, setting boundaries, keeping relationships stable, or feeling like you react in ways you can't control. I also work from a trauma-informed and CBT framework, so we address both what happened to you and the thought patterns keeping you stuck.

My clinical background includes psychiatric hospitals and addiction treatment centers, which means I've worked with the most complex presentations out there. Whatever you bring in, I can hold it.

I specialize in trauma and PTSD, anxiety, depression, narcissistic abuse and toxic relationship recovery, addiction, women's mental health, and relationship issues of all kinds. I'm licensed in NJ and NY, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and I typically get new clients in within the same week.

My approach to therapy

Therapy with me is collaborative, direct, and grounded in evidence, but it never feels like a textbook.

I am eclectic in my approach but I often use Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and I use it extensively because it works. DBT gives people concrete, learnable skills for managing overwhelming emotions, tolerating distress without making things worse, communicating needs effectively, and building relationships that don't constantly blow up. If you've ever felt like you react before you think, or that your emotions run your life more than you'd like, DBT can genuinely change that.

I also work from a trauma-informed lens, which means I understand that most of what brings people to therapy, anxiety, depression, relationship dysfunction, addiction, low self-worth, has roots in experiences that shaped you long before you walked in the door. We don't just manage symptoms. We follow them back to where they started.

CBT helps us identify and interrupt the thought patterns that keep you anxious, stuck, or self-sabotaging. And for clients navigating addiction, I bring clinical depth that goes beyond support, I'm a licensed clinical alcohol and drug counselor, which is a separate, advanced credential that's rare in a private practice setting.

Every client gets a treatment plan built around their actual life, their actual goals, and what they're actually ready to do. I don't believe in one-size-fits-all therapy, and I won't keep you comfortable when comfortable is keeping you stuck.

What you can expect from me

First sessions can bring up a little nervousness, that's completely normal, and you don't have to have the right words ready or know exactly what to say. The first thing I focus on is making sure you actually feel okay being there.

I'm warm, I'm real, and I don't take myself too seriously. Yes, we're going to talk about hard things, but that doesn't mean every moment has to be heavy. My clients are often surprised by how much we laugh, even in the middle of difficult conversations. That's not accidental. People open up when they feel safe, not when they feel like they're being evaluated. My job in that first session is to make sure you leave feeling heard, not analyzed.

Here's what the first session actually looks like: we talk. I ask questions, I listen carefully, and I start getting a real picture of what's going on for you, not just the symptoms, but the whole person. I'll share my initial thoughts, and together we'll start mapping out what you actually want to change and how we might get there.

You won't leave empty-handed. Even from the first session, I make sure clients walk away with something concrete, a skill, a reframe, a tool they can use that same week. Therapy shouldn't be something that only works after months of talking. You should feel the difference right away.

By the end of our first hour together, my goal is simple: that you feel more hopeful than when you started, clearer about what's possible, and genuinely glad you made the call.
