Great to meet you!

Some of what you are carrying has never fit neatly into words. I'm Richard, a licensed marriage and family therapist in California and a working artist with a master's degree in fine art. Over twenty years in mental health, across inpatient units, day programs, and skilled nursing, I have sat with teens, adults, and seniors through anxiety, depression, grief and loss, bipolar disorder, family conflict, stress, and the weight of chronic illness. I am patient, open-minded, and inclusive, and when talking stalls I bring in expressive art. You do not need to be an artist for that to help. Come as you are.

My approach to therapy

I am primarily a solution focused and person centered therapist with a theoretical orientation of an existential humanist. I'm primarily focused on the present tense and taking responsibility for ones actions. I am patient, inclusive, non-confrontational and always fully present in sessions.

What you can expect from me

Our first session is mostly you talking and me listening, with a few questions to understand what brought you here and what you want to be different. Nothing is off limits and nothing gets judged, whether it is a relationship that keeps stalling, anger you do not like in yourself, a question about who you are, or grief you have been carrying alone. By the end you will know what we would work on together, how we would work on it, and what your next step is. Most of all you should leave feeling heard, which is the part most people are quietly worried about.
