I have counseled individuals, couples, and families, served as youth pastor, marriage/family counselor, veteran's counselor, worked within in-patient and out-patient treatment centers, probate/drug courts, and psychiatric hospital settings. I developed various programs including: anger management, men's issues, co-dependency, relapse prevention, drug court, and dual diagnosis.
I utilize cognitive-behavioral strategies (change your thinking first to act and feel different), and solution-focused brief therapy methods to work toward achieving notable progress within the least amount of time. I prefer to focus on the current issues and future goals, and help people improve their communication and coping skills.
During the first session I try to learn a little about the client, their interests, hobbies, and passion. I also like to share some information about myself so they can decide if we are a good fit for each other. I will ask what prompted their decision for coming and what they expect to gain from counseling.
