Great to meet you!

My name is Sara and I graduated from Adelphi in 2017 with my MSW. Shortly after I obtained my license and began to work in Queens in a hospital doing inpatient psychiatric social work. I have worked with all populations on each of our specialty units, including adolescents, young and older adults, and aging. I spent most of my time working with individuals aged 18-62 presenting with a multitude of acute crises. I range from working with individuals experience first-break symptoms, all through chronic and treatment resistant symptoms. I have also held supervisory and administrative roles, in which I provided direct supervision and guidance for other healthcare professionals, primarily social workers. I also specialize in family dynamics and counseling, as well as mediation.

My approach to therapy

I would describe my approach to therapy with one word specifically; curiosity. I have found that my most meaningful therapeutic processes and engagements come from meeting with others without an agenda, but instead just wanting to know as much as what is going on, being felt, and has happened by an individual that they are willing to let me in to, and going from there. I believe there are times people just need to talk and vent their thoughts and feelings about a particular day or event, and that is okay. Other times people may feel unable to explain what they are feeling, and we can try to explore and understand it together. Or there are times where validation and assurance is not enough or helpful, and feedback and collaboration will be what is needed. I strive to create a space where clients can feel like themselves, feel unjudged, and feel like a meaningful participant in their healing or journey. I believe we can have an effective therapeutic process while still being able to talk person-to-person, rather than feeling like you're in an office answering a checklist of questions.

What you can expect from me

First sessions can often feel awkward or anxiety provoking, not knowing what to expect from one another, and wondering if one another will be understood. I want for everyone to be able to come in feeling like this time is genuinely and entirely for them. That this will be a process where we will create an environment together that will help reach their goals or develop skills and acceptance of themselves and the world around them. I will work with you to figure out the best dynamic and style for our sessions in order to gain what it is you're hoping to.
