The foundation of a beneficial therapeutic alliance is a safe and accepting relationship. Within that context, I utilize a therapeutic approach called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT is based on Contextual Behavioral Science and incorporates mindfulness techniques as well as methods to gain a better understanding of how your mind works. With this enhanced understanding, clients can better understand how their minds can trap them into unhealthy ways of feeling and acting.
While a supportive and validating listener is a critical part of therapy, clients should come to sessions prepared to take an active role in moving their lives in a direction that is consistent with their core values. Psychological pain and unhealthy behavior patterns have meaning even if not apparent on the surface. Clients should expect to practice mindfulness skills learned in session and set specific, yet achievable, behavioral goals prior to their next appointment.
