Great to meet you!

I am Sharon Atwood, a dual board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Adult Nurse Practitioner with over a decade of hands-on clinical experience serving adults and older adults. I hold active, unrestricted licenses in Florida, New York, California, and Idaho, and I provide care through both telehealth and outpatient settings.

My academic journey reflects a deep, enduring passion for mental health and human behavior. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology magna cum laude from Kean University, followed by a Master of Science in Nursing from Florida Atlantic University and a Post-Master's Certificate in Psychiatric-Mental Health from the University of Miami, both completed summa cum laude. I maintain board certifications through ANCC and AANP and hold active membership in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, and the California Association of Nurse Practitioners.

My clinical background spans adult and geriatric primary care, integrated psychiatric services, crisis intervention, and outpatient psychiatric medication management. This diverse experience has prepared me to address a wide range of conditions with both skill and compassion, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, OCD, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, sleep disturbances, grief, anger management, and complex co-occurring presentations. I welcome individuals with treatment-resistant symptoms and those still searching for the right provider.

I specialize in working with adults aged 18 and older, helping to uncover root causes and develop plans for genuine growth. My approach is collaborative and evidence-based, combining psychiatric medication management with integrative wellness strategies that address sleep, nutrition, exercise, stress, and meaningful connection. I believe that expert care works best alongside healthy lifestyle habits and a sense of humor.

My approach to therapy

My philosophy rests on partnership, clinical precision, and a sincere belief that skilled psychiatric treatment reaches its strongest outcomes when it is combined with healthy lifestyle practices and a genuine touch of lightheartedness. With over ten years of experience spanning adult and geriatric primary care, integrated psychiatric services, crisis intervention, and outpatient medication management, I bring a uniquely broad and integrated perspective to every person I serve.

I focus on supporting adults 18 and older, carefully identifying the root causes and building practical, individualized strategies for meaningful and lasting progress. Whether through telehealth or an outpatient setting, my approach is always evidence-based, deeply person-centered, and aimed at helping you find real comfort and greater stability in your daily life.

I take time to understand the full picture of who you are: your symptoms, psychiatric history, medical background, family patterns, daily habits, and personal aspirations—because truly effective care must honor the whole person, never a diagnosis in isolation. You are far more than any single label ever assigned to you.

In medication management, I am intentional and transparent. I conduct thorough, careful evaluations, explain my reasoning clearly, and guide you through all available options: how medications work, their benefits, timelines, and potential side effects. I embrace shared decision-making, ensuring your voice, preferences, and comfort guide each step we take together. I track your progress carefully, welcome your honest feedback openly, and adjust our approach whenever your evolving needs call for change.

I coordinate with your other providers whenever collaboration can improve your outcome, and I remain accessible between appointments. My deepest purpose is to gently guide you toward lasting symptom relief and renewed balance, steadily supporting the future you truly deserve.

What you can expect from me

Your first visit is devoted to getting to know you and building a genuine partnership rooted in trust and mutual respect. As a dual board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Adult Nurse Practitioner with over a decade of experience across varied clinical settings, I am well equipped to meet you exactly where you are right now.

We will begin by exploring what brought you in: the symptoms weighing on you most and how they are currently affecting your daily life, your work, relationships, sleep, and overall wellbeing. I specialize in working with adults eighteen and older across a wide range of conditions, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, OCD, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, sleep difficulties, grief, and complex co-occurring presentations. I welcome the chance to uncover root causes and build meaningful, actionable plans for your growth and healing.

I will review your psychiatric background: prior diagnoses, past treatments, and medications you have tried, what helped, what fell short, and any side effects you experienced. We will also discuss your medical history, current prescriptions, family psychiatric patterns, and lifestyle factors such as sleep, nutrition, exercise, and stress. If medication management becomes part of our plan, I will walk you through all your options in plain language: how they work, realistic timelines for improvement, possible side effects, and how we will monitor your response together.

I believe strongly in collaborative decision-making, and your comfort and preferences will always guide our direction. I also explore how healthy lifestyle habits and integrative wellness practices can meaningfully support your progress alongside your psychiatric care. You will leave with a clear diagnosis, a personalized treatment plan, and a committed partner focused on helping you move steadily toward lasting health and wellbeing.
