In a first session, clients can expect a welcoming, low-pressure conversation focused on getting to know one another and beginning to understand what brings them to therapy. There is no expectation to share everything at once or to have a clear plan before arriving.
What We’ll Cover
We’ll typically talk about:
- What has been feeling difficult, stressful, or important lately
- What prompted you to seek support now
- Your goals for therapy, even if they are still forming
- Relevant background, relationships, strengths, and current supports
- What has helped—or not helped—in the past
- Any practical questions about the therapy process, boundaries, scheduling, and confidentiality
My Approach
I use the first session to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and help you feel more oriented to the process. I want to understand not only the challenges you are facing, but also the values, experiences, and strengths you bring with you.
You can expect a warm and collaborative approach. I may offer reflections, help you identify early patterns or priorities, and begin discussing what our work together could look like. At the same time, you remain in control of what you share and the pace at which we explore it.
What You Don’t Need to Do
You do not need to prepare a perfect story, know your diagnosis, or decide exactly what you want from therapy before the first appointment. It is completely okay to feel nervous, unsure, emotional, or simply curious.
By the end of our session, we will have a clearer sense of whether working together feels like a good fit and what next steps might best support you.
