Great to meet you!

I'm Stephanie Berghorn, a licensed therapist and founder of Penrose Counseling in Denver. I work with teens and adults navigating anxiety, depression, addiction and recovery, postpartum adjustment, and major life transitions. Many of my clients come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, stuck, or uncertain about how to move forward. My goal is to help you find relief while creating meaningful, lasting change.

I bring experience from both outpatient and community mental health settings, where I've supported individuals and families through a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and relational challenges. My approach is warm, direct, and collaborative. I'm not a "just nod and listen" therapist. I actively help clients understand the underlying patterns contributing to their struggles and provide practical tools they can use in everyday life.

My work is grounded in evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Together, we'll build effective coping skills while also exploring deeper emotional patterns that impact relationships, recovery, self-worth, and life transitions including the challenges that can accompany the postpartum period.

In our work together, you can expect a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where you feel safe to be honest and fully yourself. We'll work to reduce anxiety, improve mood, strengthen emotional resilience, and develop healthier ways of navigating life's challenges. My goal is for you to leave therapy feeling both understood and empowered with greater clarity, confidence, and practical tools for lasting growth.

My approach to therapy

My approach is grounded in evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). I use CBT to help you better understand the connection between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and to develop healthier, more effective ways of responding to life's challenges. The goal isn't to eliminate difficult thoughts altogether, but to reduce their impact and help you feel more grounded, confident, and in control.

I also incorporate DBT to strengthen emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and practical coping skills, particularly when emotions feel intense or overwhelming. Through EFT, we can explore deeper emotional experiences and relationship patterns that may be contributing to current struggles. Together, we'll identify what's happening beneath the surface while building the tools needed to create meaningful change.

Therapy with me is collaborative, supportive, and tailored to your unique needs. I'll meet you where you are, while also helping you move toward where you want to be. My goal is to provide a space where you feel understood, challenged in helpful ways, and equipped with practical strategies that support lasting growth both in and outside of our sessions.

What you can expect from me

I believe therapy can be a space for both meaningful growth and moments of laughter. From our very first session, you'll be welcomed into a warm, supportive, and judgment-free environment where you can openly share what’s on your mind and begin gaining greater clarity and insight.

Together, we’ll explore what brought you to therapy, identify what matters most to you, and work toward the changes you’d like to see in your life. Along the way, you’ll learn practical tools and strategies that you can start using right away to feel more grounded, resilient, and supported in your everyday experiences.

My goal is to help you leave each session feeling heard, empowered, and more confident in your ability to navigate life’s challenges. Whether you're ready to begin therapy or simply exploring your options, I’d be honored to support you on your journey toward healing and growth.
