Great to meet you!

I’m Dr. Stephanie Smigiel, PhD, LPC, the founder of Smigiel Counseling, and I’ve worked in the behavioral health field since 2013 supporting children, adolescents, adults, and families. My practice is grounded in a neurodiversity-affirming, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approach, shaped by both professional training and lived experience. I specialize in working with neurodivergent individuals and trauma across the lifespan, from early childhood through adulthood, and tailor treatment to each client’s unique needs, goals, and strengths.

My approach to therapy

My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, and client-centered. I prioritize creating a comfortable, welcoming environment where clients feel safe to be themselves and genuinely enjoy our work together. I’m a thoughtful, engaged listener who believes strong relationships are the foundation for meaningful change. I integrate multiple evidence-based modalities — including EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS), the Unified Protocol (UP), and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) — and tailor treatment to each client’s unique needs, strengths, and goals. Above all, my aim is to ensure clients feel understood, respected, and empowered, while gaining practical tools that support lasting growth and healing.

What you can expect from me

In your first session, you can expect a warm, welcoming, and low-pressure experience focused on getting to know you as a whole person, not just the challenges that brought you in. We’ll talk about what led you to seek therapy, what you’re hoping to gain from it, and any past experiences with counseling that feel important to share. I’ll listen closely, ask thoughtful questions, and help create a sense of safety and collaboration from the start. We’ll also review practical details like confidentiality, therapy structure, and next steps, so you leave knowing what to expect moving forward. There’s no expectation to share everything right away — the first session is about building comfort, trust, and a plan that feels right for you.
