Great to meet you!

Hi, I'm Steve Freilich. I'm an unusually down-to-earth psychologist. My greatest strengths are my broad repertoire of interpersonal and analytic skills, insights, strategies, and a very empathic style that will help you feel very much understood and comfortable sharing anything. I help you achieve long lasting relief from emotional pain and/or help you solve significant life problems complicated or magnified by emotional obstacles (yours or others). Over 90% of those who start to work with me return for more sessions - many for a while.

My specialties are trauma, divorce, anger, addiction, anxiety, and adjusting to medical conditions. My clinical work is also informed by my extensive research experience at the University of Rochester and Strong Memorial Hospital (Eg. Dr. David Olds with prevention work among low income teen mothers and Dr. Ed Deci's SDT model helping ESRD patients).

For decades I've helped reduce suffering and bring hope alive again. I've helped solve personal "life puzzles", simplified huge decisions, profiled situations/people, or simply guided successful but challenging lives to increased joy, peace, and prosperity.

My approach to therapy

That our relationships is half of it. You slowly learning to trust our work so you can naturally, because of feeling safe and validated, allow yourself to 'speak your mind' and your feelings. The other half are insights and empathy on my part. I share my thoughts in a very non-intimidating manner; I'm not just a listener. I also ask enough questions to learn, and to make sure I am getting things right. During all this you come to know yourself more, gain power to move forward, and we strategize together that which isn't just knowing/feeling-but doing. So...I am eclectic pulling from self-psychology as well as cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and gestalt modalities. But most importantly, I'm a natural healer/safe person- and second generation Psychologist (kind of in the blood).

What you can expect from me

Help with clarifying what is hurting you-what brought you in. It might be what is missing in your life or something that has already happened that you need to figure out how to process and move on from. A sense of me...what it might be like to work with me-my potential effectiveness/usefulness. A sense of a direction of where we might go to achieve your goals or how we might figure out those goals together.
