Great to meet you!

Susan X Day, PhD, has done counseling work in a rural Medicaid community mental health clinic, on hospital rehabilitation wards, in a Veterans Administration Medical Center, at a university student counseling clinic, and with troubled dissertation writers (her specialty). She has put her University of Illinois doctorate to use: she wrote the widely used textbook Theory and Design in Counseling and Psychotherapy (2004, 2008; Lahaska/Houghton Mifflin) and has published research in flagship scholarly journals Psychological Science, Journal of Counseling Psychology, and American Psychologist. Her readable and amusing prose style distinguishes her among academic writers, and warmth and accessibility stand out in her counseling sessions, too.

My approach to therapy

I am an active and expressive listener who focuses on practical approaches to reaching goals. I am guided by person-centered theory and believe that changes in thinking lead to positive changes in action and mood.

What you can expect from me

My clients learn where their psychological and career strengths are and how these strengths can be mobilized to compensate for their weaknesses and for problems in their social situation. Clients can expect down-to-earth conversations in which they discover the solutions that lie within themselves.
