Great to meet you!

My name is Sylvia Fernandez Chamberlain. I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in San Diego County, California. I have a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Humboldt State University. I graduated in 1982. I majored in dance and Native American Studies. I have a Master's Degree from Antioch University in Clinical Psychology. I graduated in 1989. I returned to Antioch in October 2020 to 2023 where I supervised Graduate Trainees to be licensed as Marriage, Family Therapists. I have taught parenting since 1989 and more recently to divorcing parents the past 15 years. For years I struggled with my own early childhood trauma. After years of movement and studies in Native American Philosophy and Culture that addressed my personal identification. I felt more in control of my personal traumas. I was able to heal myself through movement and years of yoga meditation. All of which led me to believe that I could benefit others in their journey to heal. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Somatic Theory, Narrative Therapy, Mindfulness, Trauma-Focused Therapy and Attachment Therapy to assist clients in recognizing their inner self. I work exclusively via telehealth, which means you can access support from the comfort of your own space.

My approach to therapy

I believe therapy works best when it's collaborative, structured, and grounded in where you actually are right now. I pay close attention to how you're functioning day to day and tailor my work to your specific goals — whether that's building communication skills, working through relationship challenges, or processing difficult experiences. I'm warm and direct, and I'll check in with you regularly to make sure we're moving in a direction that feels right for you.

What you can expect from me

Our first session is really about getting to know you — your history, what's bringing you to therapy right now, and what you're hoping to feel or do differently. I'll ask questions to understand where you're at and we'll start building a plan together. You can expect to leave feeling heard, with a clearer sense of what our work together will look like.
