Great to meet you!

I'm Tamara Johnson, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with 16 years of experience in behavioral health — and understand firsthand what it means to navigate life's pressures while carrying the weight of your financial barrier, community, your history, and your own expectations. I work with adults, adolescents, and couples facing anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, and relationship strain. I bring a full toolkit to every session: EMDR for trauma, DBT for emotional regulation, Gottman Method for couples, ACT for living in alignment with your values, and CBT for breaking patterns that keep you stuck. I currently accept Aetna, Cigna, BCBS, and Carelon — so getting started doesn't have to be a financial barrier.

My approach to therapy

My approach is warm, direct, and deeply practical. I don't believe in spending years in therapy without seeing real change. I combine evidence-based methods with genuine human connection — because the research matters, but so does feeling like the person across from you actually gets it. Depending on what you're working through, we might use EMDR to process trauma that keeps resurfacing, DBT skills to manage overwhelming emotions, Gottman techniques to rebuild trust and communication in your relationship, or ACT strategies to reconnect you with what actually matters to you. I meet you where you are and adjust as you grow. Sessions are goal-oriented, but never rigid — your life doesn't fit a template, and your therapy shouldn't either.

What you can expect from me

Expect to be heard without being rushed and without having to earn your place in the room. Our first session is a real conversation — not a 50-question intake form read aloud. We'll talk about what brought you in, what you've already tried, and what you're hoping for. I'll share what I'm noticing and we'll start sketching out a direction together. You don't have to have the "right" answers. You don't have to be in crisis. You just have to show up. By the end of that first hour, you'll have a clearer sense of what we're working toward and why — and you'll know whether this is the right fit. Most clients leave that session feeling relieved that they finally started.
