Great to meet you!

I’m Tamara Porter Joiner, a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado. I have a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Denver Seminary. I have worked in adult outpatient for the past six years. I have experienced working in crisis walk-in clinics and stabilization units. I have background working as a Multi-systemic family therapist helping parents and teens navigate challenges with school, addiction, and family conflict. I completed the Trauma Research Foundation’s Certification Program in Traumatic Stress Studies under Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk, one of the most respected voices in trauma research today.

My approach to therapy

I built my practice because I believe healing has to reach every part of you - relational, emotional, mental, recreational, and spiritual. Not just the symptom you came in with. All of you. My approach is trauma informed, relational, and skills based.

My approach integrates sound counseling principles with a Christian worldview when appropriate and desired by the client. For clients who want faith to be part of their counseling experience, we may explore prayer, Scripture, spiritual identity, forgiveness, grace, purpose, and the ways faith can provide strength and hope. At the same time, I recognize that faith can sometimes be complicated, particularly when someone has experienced spiritual hurt, disappointment, grief, or questions about God. Those experiences are welcome in the counseling room as well.

What you can expect from me

The first session will not be a rapid intake form but rather learning about you as a whole person. My approach covers five dimensions of your life: relational, emotional, mental, recreational, and spiritual. I like to discuss more than just the immediate problem. I’ll ask questions about your relationships, what brings you meaning or joy, your support system, and anything spiritual or values-based that matters to you. You are more than your symptoms, and I want to understand the whole of who you are from the very first conversation.
