Clients can expect the first session to focus on establishing a safe, supportive, and collaborative foundation for therapy. I begin by getting to know you, your current concerns, and what has brought you to seek support at this time. This includes exploring symptoms, stressors, and any experiences related to trauma, anxiety, occupational stress, burnout, interpersonal violence, emotional overwhelm, or significant life transitions.
We will also review relevant personal history, including prior treatment, coping strategies, and any factors that may be impacting your emotional, physical, relational, or occupational functioning. I approach this process in a trauma-informed and paced manner, meaning you do not need to share anything before you feel ready. My goal is to understand your experiences without overwhelm, while ensuring the session feels grounded and contained.
The initial session also serves as a clinical assessment to help clarify current symptoms, identify treatment needs, and collaboratively begin developing a treatment plan tailored to your goals. Together, we will begin to identify areas of focus such as symptom reduction, stabilization, coping skill development, trauma processing readiness, or support with current life stressors.
Clients can also expect space to ask questions about therapy, my approach, and what ongoing treatment may look like. I strive to create an environment that is respectful, steady, and attuned, where you can begin to determine whether this feels like the right therapeutic fit.
Overall, the first session is about understanding your story at your pace, beginning to identify what support may be most helpful, and laying the groundwork for a therapeutic process that is collaborative, evidence-based, and individualized to your needs.
