Terrance Rooney

I'm a psychodynamic psychotherapist and psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City. I earned my MSW in Clinical Social Work from New York University and graduated from the Adult Psychoanalytic Training Program at the Psychoanalytic Association of New York (PANY), affiliated with NYU Grossman School of Medicine, where I also teach.

I work with adults dealing with anxiety, trauma, grief, loss, work and relationship difficulties, and life transitions. I have particular experience with people in the arts, including performers, and with early-career clinicians in their own treatment.

Many people come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure why certain patterns keep repeating. My work is built around a steady therapeutic relationship, with attention to what repeats, what becomes difficult to say, and how feelings are handled as they come up. I stay close to what you're experiencing rather than working from a set method. I listen more than I direct, though I'll be direct when it's useful. Over time, this can make long standing patterns clearer and create room for different ways of responding. I work once weekly and, when it would help, more often.

The first session is a conversation. We'll talk about what brought you in, what you're hoping for, and any questions you have about how the work goes. There's no pressure to have it all figured out or to say everything at once. It's also a chance to get a feel for whether we're a good fit, which matters as much as anything else in deciding how to begin.
