The first therapy session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin building a foundation for our work together. My goal is to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where you feel comfortable sharing at your own pace.
During the first session, we will discuss what brought you to therapy and the concerns or challenges you would like support with. I may ask questions about your current symptoms, stressors, personal history, and any previous experiences with counseling. These questions help me gain a better understanding of your needs and determine how therapy can best support you.
We will also review important information such as confidentiality, boundaries, and what to expect from the therapeutic process. If you have any questions or concerns about therapy, this is a good time to ask them. You are not expected to share everything right away, and there is no pressure to talk about anything you are not ready to discuss.
Together, we will begin identifying initial goals for therapy. These goals may include improving emotional regulation, reducing symptoms of anxiety or depression, developing healthier coping skills, strengthening relationships, or increasing overall emotional well-being. Goals are collaborative and flexible and can be adjusted as your needs evolve.
My approach in the first session is collaborative and client-centered. I work to meet you where you are, respect your experiences, and help you feel supported as we begin the process of healing and growth. Many clients leave the first session with a clearer understanding of their concerns and a sense of direction for next steps.
