Great to meet you!

Hello! My name is Ms. Tonja Stewart, and welcome to my bio! I am a board-certified Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Virginia. I have been in the counseling field for over 25 years. My specialties include depression, anxiety, adjustment issues, grief and loss, adults 18+, and family counseling. I have worked in a multitude of different healthcare settings, including outpatient, inpatient psychiatric, foster care, intensive in-home (family-based), school-based (therapeutic day treatment), case management, as well as community and residential crisis stabilization (substance abuse and family crisis). I focus on the importance of exuding a supportive, open-minded, and non-judgmental perspective, with a strong focus on building the therapeutic relationship. I look forward to helping you with any of your healthcare concerns, and thank you for trusting me with your care!

My approach to therapy

My primary approach to therapy is Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), where the focus is on how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected and influence each other; however, it is also my belief/practice that a multi-therapeutic approach can be very effective regarding the treatment of a condition or in providing comprehensive care (psychoanalysis, psychoeducation, holistic, family-focused, etc.).

What you can expect from me

It is my goal that my clients will walk away from therapy with the following: Improved self-awareness and self-improvement (a deeper understanding of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, including underlying patterns and issues), the development of healthy(ier) coping mechanisms, and feelings of empowerment and personal growth.
