Great to meet you!
Hello, my name is Toyo, and I am a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in the state of Texas. I graduated from the University of Houston's Graduate College of Social Work or GCSW, and upon graduation, joined Severance Therapy as an Associate Clinician. Here are some things that you might want to know to better understand what kind of therapist I am and if I might be a suitable therapist for you. As a gay Black man in social work, I understand how mental healthcare can fall short of addressing the root cause of psychological distress holistically, taking into account the unique lived experiences brought on by all forms of oppression. That is why I am beyond passionate to join Severance Therapy’s mission to provide affirming, inclusive care, and hope that you are equally excited to build this space with us. I believe that healing goes beyond learning to cope with the day-to-day and entails building a life bit by bit that is fulfilling and authentic. Everyone has this ability, but may struggle to tap into it due to both personal and systemic barriers. For instance, my work with Severance Therapy will build off my non-profit social work experience specializing in the treatment of co-occurring disorders (concurrent mental health and substance use disorders). My work thus far has focused on reducing recidivism for crimes related to substances, administering harm reduction and overdose prevention services, reducing access barriers to gainful employment and treatment for co-occurring disorders, and mental health counseling.
