My approach to therapy

Providing quality psychiatric care begins with building trust through empathy, active listening, and a nonjudgmental approach. Conduct a thorough assessment of mental, physical, and social health, including safety screenings for suicide or self-harm. Develop individualized, evidence-based treatment plans using shared decision-making, and educate patients about their diagnosis, medications, and therapy options. Treat the whole person by addressing lifestyle, medical conditions, trauma, and support systems. Encourage hope, resilience, and realistic goals while coordinating care with therapists, primary care providers, and family when appropriate. Consistent follow-up, clear communication, cultural sensitivity, and compassionate care help improve outcomes and empower patients to actively participate in their recovery.

What you can expect from me

During the first visit with a Tysheka Cephas Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), clients can expect a comprehensive, compassionate, and confidential evaluation. The session typically includes discussing current concerns, symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, medications, family history, trauma history (when appropriate), substance use, sleep, stress, and daily functioning. I will ask questions to better understand the client’s needs, assess safety, and work collaboratively to develop an individualized treatment plan. This may include lifestyle recommendations, therapy referrals, medication options if appropriate, and setting goals for treatment. Most importantly, the first session is an opportunity to build trust, ask questions, and begin a partnership focused on improving mental health and overall well-being.
