Great to meet you!

Working directly with clients to help them reach their highest potential is my passion through brief psychotherapy and medication management when warranted.

Valerie Markley, DNP, PMHNP-BC, is a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner dedicated to helping individuals improve their mental health, overcome challenges, and reach their fullest potential. Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, she later made Indiana her home after marrying a Hoosier and completing her nursing degrees there. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree through the Chapman University System in California.

Valerie served as a tenured professor at Indiana University for over 30 years and has more than a decade of clinical experience as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Her work has spanned community-based mental health programs and inpatient settings, providing compassionate, evidence-based care to adults and adolescents (ages 13 and up). In addition to her clinical work, Valerie proudly served 21 years in the U.S. Army Reserves. She has contributed to the scholarly field as author of two book chapters on mood disorders and one on sexuality and aging. She is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Nurses Association (ANA), the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA), Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), Neuroscience Education Institute (NEI), and the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States (AMSUS).

My approach to therapy

I believe in client-centered care, working collaboratively with clients to help them achieve their best potential. I use interpersonal, cognitive behavioral therapy, and motivational interviewing.

What you can expect from me

We must begin with establishing what the client wants from treatment. A mental health assessment and evaluation are essential as we begin. Prescribing medications as needed and establishing goals for continuing therapy are important beginning steps in treatment.
