During your first session with me, you can expect a welcoming, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where your comfort and safety are my top priorities. The initial session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin building a foundation of trust. I will invite you to share what brought you to therapy, your current concerns, and any goals or hopes you have for treatment—at your own pace.
We will look over relevant background information, talk about your personal history as it relates to your mental health, and explore any immediate stressors or challenges you may be having. I also take time to explain the therapeutic process, answer your questions, and clarify expectations so you feel informed and empowered from the start.
Together, we typically begin identifying initial goals, which may include gaining clarity around your concerns, developing coping strategies, reducing distressing symptoms, or improving overall emotional well-being. These goals are flexible and collaborative, and they evolve as your needs and priorities become clearer.
My aim in the first session is not to “fix” everything, but to create a space where you feel heard, understood, and supported. By the end of the session, clients often leave with a clearer understanding of their next steps, a sense of relief from being able to share openly, and confidence that they are in a respectful and compassionate therapeutic partnership.
