Great to meet you!

I work with clients 18 and over, individually and in couples. To my work I bring a completely accepting, non-judgemental attitude, close listening for what is said and what is implied, clinical sensitivity, therapeutic creativity, life experience, a high amount of empathy, and decades of understanding of the complex ways of how the psyche works. In twenty six years of seeing clients I have helped people with stress, anxiety, relationship issues, low self-esteem, worry, poor sleep, depression, and relationship issues, among others. In working with couples the most common issues is communication difficulties, sexual issues, conflicts in expectations, among many others. And I have worked with people who are about to commit to each other, those married or in a relationship, and even couples that broke up before they saw me and want to work on how to best be with each other and with their children post-relationship.

A bit about my approach to therapy

Initially I strive to get to know my clients - their issues, struggles, strengths, self-image, professional and social functioning, aspirations, and how they communicate. Then collaboratively they and I create an initial approach to resolving their issues, always checking in every few sessions re how it is working and any signs of progress. This can show itself in improvements, in a feeling of being understood, or even feeling lighter and less burdened.

Therapy is a complex activity; there is no one way to work on an issue. Over the years I have collaborated on creating techniques and strategies to lessen symptoms, have explored with my client the early sources of their issues, or provided suggestions and advice that may help them to move forward. Sometimes what is most helpful is to listen sensitively, being there with them in their struggles, until they feel strong enough to try to move ahead on their own. Sensitive flexibility is my approach. I have experienced that, no matter how serious or deep the problem is, if my client keeps their sessions, talks, and listens there is always hope.

What you can expect from our first session

First a client will experience being closely listened to by someone very interested in hearing them. They will feel a high level of respect and interest for what are going through (actually, years ago I may have been going through a similar struggle myself!)

Here is a testimonial from a former client from about a year ago: "Brian is an empowering therapist and highly recommended! Brian is flexible in approaches to therapy and eager to make it work well for your needs with a seemingly infinite amount of curiosity and compassion. I very much appreciated Brian's depth of knowledge in the spiritual and cultural realms – this kind of integration is something I needed for this work to be meaningful and Brian was always able to deliver know and impactful connections. I'll miss our weekly chats but I'm looking forward to continuing the work from where we left off with many of me goals advancing. I am confident he will be a quality therapist for your goals too!"
