Great to meet you!

Brooke Hackett, LCSW, RPTTM , received her professional degrees from the University of Maine and has roughly 15 years of supporting children and their families. Brooke began her career social work career as a Behavioral Health professional, supporting families in their homes and communities; it is in this role that Brooke learned the importance of working with a child’s family system. and her passion for attachment focused work took root. Brooke has worked supporting children in schools and most recently, exclusively as an out patient clinician, working individually with children, family systems and parents navigating challenging parenting stressors. Brooke is a Registered Play Therapist, with hours of specialized training around supporting kids using their natural language: Play! Brooke is also a certified facilitator of Raising Kids with Big Baffling Behaviors: a course for Parents created by Robyn Gobbel. A neurodiversity affirming approach to parenting that pulls on neuroscience and attachment research to empower parents to be their own experts on how to best support their children.

My approach to therapy

Throughout her career as a therapist, Brooke has pursued training in a variety of therapeutic models including Child Centered Play Therapy, Adlerian Play Therapy, Theraplay, and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF CBT). For Brooke, play therapy isn’t just a technique—it’s the language of childhood. She believes that every toy is a tool for storytelling, healing, and growth. Brooke describes some of her favorite moments in the playroom as those when when caregivers and children are able to come together, rediscover joy, and build stronger, more compassionate relationships. Outside of dyadic, attachment focused sessions, Brooke's Brooke believes in each child's ability to gain insight and integrate changes to better support their functioning and relationships and holds great respect for each childs unique clients pace. Brooke believes that growth can never come at the expense of the child and that the therapeutic relationship is the most important tool in the playroom.

What you can expect from me

In the first session, this is your time to come and share your families story and ask any questions you might have to ensure that Brooke is the right fit for what your family is looking for. As a parent herself, Brooke understands the vulnerability it takes to come forward and seek support for yourself, your child and/or your family and the strength you are demonstrating by making this first step. Brooke will always prioritize your right to share at your own pace, while working hard from this first session on to establish a foundation of safety for yourself, and your child, such that you may be able to share the hard stuff in a safe, attuned and supportive environment, when you are ready.

In the first session, if you are coming for your child, Brooke asks that you leave them home such that you can talk about your experiences parenting them and their behaviors/functioning freely. Brooke will fill you in on her apprach to supporting kids, information regarding how she thinks about behavior, and walk you through assessments that will happen next. After the assessments Brooke will provide you with her recommendations on best next steps; whether it be support for you as the parent, a referral for couples counseling or individual parent work, dyadic attachment work, individual play therapy for your child, or a combination of any of the above. Brooke always welcomes your thoughts and opinions about these next steps and prioritizes having a shared vision and goal for your family.
