Great to meet you!

Hi, my name is David Mitchell. I am a licensed professional counselor in the state of Michigan with 10 years experience helping clients work through various challenges. I have extensive experience helping individuals with housing challenges, drug and alcohol addiction, families of an addicted persons, crisis management, and neurodivergent individuals adjust to life challenges. I also have the training to help clients with concerns like: anxiety, depression, life changes and life direction concerns. I have extended training in men's issues like: anger, lust, affairs, and pornography use. I have training and experience in helping couples with a variety of challenges and enjoy that work immensely. I have been told by my superiors in my early work settings that I make a good partner for female clients. I have a gentle encouraging style with an ability to clarify complicated issues and build a solid relationship. I have also faired well with working with older adults. My wife tells me I should have been born in a different generation. I relate to the older generations because I value hard work, live by my values, and like to sacrifice for my family and closest friends.

My approach to therapy

My approach to therapy is to build a solid foundation of trust with my client and work together collaboratively to find direction, solutions, and answers. I trust that my clients are experts on their lives and their unique circumstances. I strive to be an expert in all all areas of mental health. Together I believe we can be an effective pair to move forward in a variety of challenges.

An approach I find myself using regularly is CBT. I believe that in many circumstances changing how we see things can lower our stress and anxiety. I also find myself using a systematic approaches to problems with my clients. Understanding how several components contribute to a problem can be key to solving an ongoing dilemma.

Despite being a fairly practical thinker I do find myself working well with people who are in emotionally difficult circumstance. I know that life can be really challenging at times and we all need someone to simply care and be a there. I truly feel for my clients and believe that the person in the therapy chair is courageously putting themselves out there. I want to equally put my caring concern on the line for my clients.

Another approach to therapy that I am interested in is combining mental health counseling with faith based counseling. I am a Christian with masters level biblical training. I do believe that therapy and faith can be combined to created meaningful change. I would be interested approaching counseling this way for individuals who specifically request this approach.

What you can expect from me

In a first session, clients expect to share about their life story, important experiences, and reasons for pursuing counseling. I recognize that first sessions are the first opportunity for clients to determine if they feel comfortable, respected, and willing to engage with their new counselor. It's really important to me to provide an experience that feels safe and promising for the client. The other goal I have is to do a thorough and professional assessment. I try to ask thoughtful, insightful questions to really understand how I can help the client in the coming sessions. By the end of the session you will have shared important information about yourself, your goals, and we will have collaboratively devised a plan for how we could do counseling together. It would be my pleasure to have that first session with you. I really enjoy meeting potential clients and am excited when a new counseling relationship takes off. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions. Best of luck to you in finding the right counselor at this time.
