Great to meet you!

My name is Derrick C. Gibson — Licensed Professional Counselor, Elder at Brookside Ministry Church of God in Christ International, and someone who has spent his career showing up for people that many systems had already written off. I hold dual Master's degrees in Guidance and Counseling and Education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, and my work has taken me deep into Kanawha County, West Virginia — into the schools, into the judicial system, and into the lives of families navigating some of the hardest circumstances imaginable. I've worked with domestic abuse survivors, sexual abuse survivors, at-risk youth, and individuals managing anger — not from a distance, but up close, with real investment in real outcomes. I also serve as a Christian Counselor, which means faith is not a footnote in my practice — it's woven into the foundation. If you're looking for a counselor who brings both clinical training and a grounded spiritual perspective, you've found one.

My approach to therapy

I take this work seriously — and I want you to know that from the start. I bring a well-rounded, direct, and deeply compassionate approach to counseling individuals, couples, children, and teens. My background spans schools, courtrooms, churches, and community settings, which means I've learned to speak many languages of struggle and I don't flinch at complexity. Whether we're addressing trauma, family dysfunction, relationship conflict, anger, or the quiet weight of something you've never said out loud — I meet it head-on, with both clinical skill and spiritual grounding. I believe healing isn't just about managing symptoms. It's about becoming whole — and I bring everything I have to help you get there.

What you can expect from me

Expect to be heard — fully, without rush, and without judgment. I've spent years building spaces where people who felt unheard — by schools, by courts, by systems — finally found their voice. That's exactly what I'll create for you in our first session. We'll talk about what's brought you in, what you've been carrying, and what you're hoping to find on the other side of this work. I'll ask questions, but more than that, I'll listen. By the time we're done, my goal is that you leave feeling something shift — not fixed, not solved, but lighter. Like someone finally took your story seriously. Because I will.
