Great to meet you!

Dr. Esteban Toledo-Carrion is a bilingual, board certified adult and addiction psychiatrist with training in psychodynamic psychotherapy. He was born and raised in Ecuador and completed his medical training in his home country, where his interest and commitment to helping diverse populations began.

He complemented his medical studies with a research fellowship through the International Research Initiative and the P.A.I.N. group at Boston Children's Hospital, studying and authoring the impact of traumatic brain injury in children.

Dr. Toledo-Carrion finished his psychiatric degree at the Institute of Living in CT, emphasizing his training with a psychodynamic focus. He then joined the addiction psychiatry fellowship at Boston University, co-creating pioneering projects to help people suffering from substance use disorders. He also deepened his psychotherapy skills at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.

In his career Dr. Toledo-Carrion has had national and international experience across many psychiatric settings (inpatient, partial hospital programs, emergency department, collaborative primary care, criminal justice system, outpatient and consulting).

He has worked in multiple private and public systems in the US, was formerly the medical director of the Addiction Psychiatry Treatment Program at Boston Medical Center and the group practice Northeast Wellness in MA.

He is passionate about cross-cultural issues and teaching, having been a site supervisor, lecturer, and individual therapy supervisor to PA students, nurse practitioners, medical students, residents and fellows.

I work with adults facing mood, anxiety, traumatic experiences, and relational challenges; especially professionals and students who appear capable but feel depleted, frustrated and conflicted.

My approach to therapy

As a psychiatrist trained in both psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, I approach care through a psychodynamic and relational lens. I don’t view medication as a stand-alone fix, but as a tool within a deeper, collaborative process. My goal is not only to reduce symptoms but to help you better understand the patterns, histories, and internal conflicts that shape your experience of suffering and healing. In our work together, I won’t just ask, "Are the meds working?" We'll explore the interplay between various domains of your life, including personal history, relationships, work, and emotional functioning in a supportive framework.

What you can expect from me

Our work explores how early experiences shape present struggles, using psychodynamic insight and thoughtful medication to support lasting emotional growth.

If you're seeking thoughtful, collaborative care that honors your complexity beyond symptom relief, I invite you to reach out. Together we can explore the deeper patterns shaping your emotional life and consider how medication and insight can support meaningful, sustainable change.
