As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), my clients should know several important things about me and my role to foster trust, clarity, and an effective therapeutic relationship. Here’s what clients should know: I am a PMHNP-BC with specialized training in mental health care. I believe in a holistic, patient-centered approach that considers not just symptoms, but the whole person—including physical health, environment, culture, and personal goals. I’ll also provide details on confidentiality, the need for collaboration, mediation management, the therapeutic relationship, availability, and advocacy.

My approach to therapy

As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I provide holistic, evidence-based care that is centered on the individual needs of each client. I follow effectively the following approach: build trust and rapport with clients through empathy, active listening, and nonjudgmental support, create a safe environment where clients feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings, Conduct thorough assessments that consider mental, physical, emotional, social, and cultural factors, Use standardized screening tools and clinical interviews to gather information about symptoms, history, and functioning, Involve clients in developing their treatment plans, respecting their preferences, goals, and values, utilize current best practices, including psychiatric medications, psychotherapy, psychoeducation, and lifestyle interventions, educate clients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment options, medication management, and self-care strategies, regular evaluation and follow-up, maintain professional boundaries and ethics. This comprehensive, collaborative, and compassionate approach ensures that clients receive safe, effective, and personalized psychiatric care.

What you can expect from me

As a PMHNP, my clients can expect the following from their first sessions with me: Clients will be met with respect and compassion, creating a space where they feel comfortable discussing their concerns without judgment, all information shared during sessions is kept private and confidential, with exceptions only in cases involving safety concerns or legal requirements, the initial sessions will involve gathering information about the client’s mental, physical, and emotional health, as well as their medical history, lifestyle, and goal, a care plan developed collaboratively, taking into account the client’s preferences and involving them in decision-making about medications, therapy, and other interventions, informed client of potential sessions to include regular check-ins to monitor progress, address any side effects, and adjust treatment as needed.

This approach helps build a trusting therapeutic relationship and ensures clients feel supported throughout their mental health journey.
