I have been providing therapy for over 20 years and consider myself to be existential, which emphasizes meaning and existence. As a therapist, I believe the client should be included in all decisions made in the therapy relationship and process. The client should also be motivated to be an active participant. I believe the client should also be informed of the counseling process. The first session together lays the foundation for the therapeutic relationship. The therapist should disclose the importance of confidentiality and its limitations as well as the need for an honest exchange to assist in proper diagnosis and treatment. I believe the client and therapist together should author the client’s treatment plan. This includes the client’s diagnosis and goals. A correct diagnosis is important because it determines the course that we take in therapy and because it becomes a part of the client’s permanent record. The goals should be simple, measurable, realistic, achievable, and timely. As the therapist and client work together, both can develop a clearer understanding of the behavior and aspects of it.
