Great to meet you!

Hello! I'd like to introduce myself- my name is Dr. Gretchen Kafer. I am a licensed clinical psychologist who is currently providing online psychotherapy services to teens (ages 12-19) and adults (ages 20+). I currently specialize in helping individuals grappling with the complexities of anxiety, depression, neurodivergent conditions (ADHD, ASD, OCD), anger, and PTSD. In my therapeutic space, everyone is welcome, irrespective of race, sexuality, gender, neurodivergence, disability status, size, country of origin, religious affiliation, or lack thereof. Remember, you matter, and you don't have to tackle this journey alone. Reach out today, and let's embark on this transformative process together!

I earned my doctorate in Clinical Psychology, with a specialty focus in Children and Adolescents, at the Georgia School of Professional Psychology in January 1998. I completed my pre-doctoral clinical internship at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Since I first started working as a psychologist 30 years ago, I have worked with people of all ages (2 - 72) who were from diverse cultural backgrounds. I have provided psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, and families in a variety of settings, including schools, community clinics, hospitals, and private practice settings. I have extensive experience supporting clients with difficulties related to ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, depression, anxiety, trauma, chronic pain, mood swings, relationship problems, and parenting challenges. I believe all of my experiences thus far bring a unique, well-rounded, non-judgmental perspective to my therapeutic style.

My approach to therapy

I approach therapy with collaboration, empathy, and respect. I strive to create an environment that is non-judgmental and focused on the competency, resilience, and values of the clients I serve. My work is rooted in the understanding that each person's identity is shaped by their lived experiences. As a practitioner, I am deeply committed to creating a safe and affirming space for the diversity of human experience, whether that be related to race, ethnicity, culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, or ability. I have a passion for providing affirming care for clients identifying as neurodivergent, emphasizing client agency and deepening the connection of mind and body. I seek to gain a deep understanding of my clients and their struggles, and formulate therapeutic interventions based on individualized needs. I want what is best for you, with the understanding that you only get out of therapy what you put into it. Nothing meaningful comes without work and commitment, but I will be with you every step of the way.

I have advanced-training and expertise across multiple therapeutic treatment modalities, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based approaches. Therapy is always individualized, specializing in anxiety, mood regulation, and phase of life adjustments. I draw from various modalities in my practice to tailor specifically to the needs of each client. Although I lean more towards systems-based theory to understand my clients’ experiences and use Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT; examining how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors interact), I also draw upon solution-focused therapy techniques, exposure therapy for anxiety disorders, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for trauma/PTSD, DBT and ACT skills, self-compassion and mindfulness skills.

What you can expect from me

I understand how difficult it is to ask for help, let alone admit when you need it. I provide a supportive, non-judgmental, and encouraging space to work through emotions and learn to harness your strengths, overcome challenges, and move forward. My job as a therapist is to help you identify and access your internal strength and power to accomplish your goals. I utilize strategies that work for each specific client so you can feel safe to explore and express things in a way that feels best for you. I want you to be emboldened to be the best version of yourself.
