Great to meet you!

I’m Dr. Heather Cromwell, a Licensed Professional Counselor providing telehealth therapy to adults in Alaska and Oregon. I have over 10 years of experience working in behavioral health across outpatient, inpatient, and community mental health settings, including extensive work with individuals experiencing serious and persistent mental illness, anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, burnout, and emotional overwhelm.

My background includes a Ph.D. and Master’s degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, along with years of leadership and program development experience in behavioral healthcare. I bring both clinical expertise and a practical, person-centered approach to therapy.

I believe therapy works best when clients feel genuinely seen, heard, and emotionally safe. My style is warm, collaborative, direct when helpful, and grounded in authenticity. I work to create a space where clients can better understand themselves, strengthen coping skills, improve relationships, process difficult experiences, and move toward meaningful change at a pace that feels manageable and supportive.

I understand that reaching out for support can feel vulnerable, and I strive to make the process feel approachable and comfortable from the very beginning.

My approach to therapy

My approach to therapy is collaborative, compassionate, and tailored to the individual needs of each client. I believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing, growth, or emotional wellness, so I work to meet clients where they are while helping them build insight, coping skills, self-awareness, and meaningful change over time.

I tend to work from a holistic and integrative approach, drawing from evidence-based practices including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, Brainspotting (BSP), mindfulness-based strategies, trauma-informed care, and person-centered therapy. I also value practicality in therapy — helping clients not only process emotions and experiences, but also develop tools they can use in their daily lives and relationships.

Clients often describe me as warm, approachable, rwlatable, direct when needed, and easy to talk to. I strive to create a supportive, nonjudgmental space where clients can feel emotionally safe while also feeling encouraged and empowered in their growth.

I have experience supporting individuals navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic stress, burnout, relationship challenges, emotional overwhelm, self-esteem concerns, and major life transitions. My goal is to help clients feel more connected to themselves, more confident in their ability to cope, and more able to move toward the life they want to create.

What you can expect from me

Clients can expect a warm, supportive, and conversational environment during their first session with me. My goal is to help clients feel comfortable enough to begin sharing their experiences without pressure to “have it all figured out” right away. Starting therapy can feel vulnerable, and I work to create a space that feels safe, collaborative, and nonjudgmental from the beginning.

During the first session, we will talk about what brings you to therapy, any current challenges or stressors, relevant personal history, and what you hope to gain from the process. I also want to understand your strengths, supports, coping patterns, and what has or has not felt helpful in the past.

Together, we will begin identifying goals for therapy at a pace that feels manageable and realistic. Some clients come in with very clear goals, while others simply know that something feels overwhelming or difficult and want support sorting through it — both are completely okay.

By the end of the first session, my hope is that clients leave feeling heard, understood, and with a clearer sense of what working together may look like moving forward.
