In our first session, my goal is to create a calm, welcoming space where the client will feel safe sharing their experiences. I approach the conversation with curiosity, compassion, and respect, recognizing how difficult it can be to talk about struggles with food and body image. I focus on listening closely and without judgment, allowing the client to share at their own pace.
During the session, I ask open-ended questions to better understand their relationship with food, how their eating patterns have been affecting their daily life, and what brought them to therapy at this point. I also aim to understand the broader context of their experiences—stressors, emotions, and patterns that may connect to their eating concerns.
I emphasize that recovery is not about blame or perfection, but about building awareness, understanding underlying needs, and developing healthier ways of coping over time. Throughout the conversation, I validate the courage it takes to seek support and reassure them that therapy would be a collaborative process.
By the end of the session, we began to outline a gentle path forward, with a focus on moving at a pace that feels manageable and supportive for the client. My intention is to continue fostering a compassionate and nonjudgmental space where they can work toward a more peaceful relationship with food, their body, and themselves.
