Great to meet you!

Hello, and welcome. My name is Hyungbum Kang, PhD, LCSW, and I am the Clinical Director of Manoa Canon Integrated Health Centre. I specialize in the treatment of PTSD and trauma-related disorders, as well as depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, addiction, ADHD, anger management, personality disorders, and life transitions. With more than 16 years of clinical experience, I have provided psychotherapy, psychological assessments, and integrated behavioral health services to diverse populations, including military personnel, veterans, and multicultural communities.

I hold a PhD, DMin, MSW, and MBA, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Master Addiction Counselor (MAC). My approach is grounded in an integrated bio-psycho-social-cultural framework and evidence-based practice. I help clients understand the factors contributing to their difficulties, develop effective coping skills, and create meaningful, lasting change. I am committed to providing compassionate, individualized care that supports healing, resilience, and personal growth.

My approach to therapy

My approach to therapy is grounded in evidence-based practice, comprehensive assessment, and individualized treatment planning. I believe effective treatment begins with understanding the underlying causes of a client's concerns, not just the symptoms. Through clinical interviews, psychological evaluations, and both qualitative and quantitative assessments, I work collaboratively with clients to identify factors contributing to emotional, behavioral, relational, and psychological difficulties.

My therapeutic style is active, structured, and goal-oriented while maintaining a supportive and compassionate environment. I utilize evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), trauma-informed care, and relapse prevention strategies. I specialize in PTSD and trauma-related disorders, anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, ADHD, anger management, personality disorders, and co-occurring conditions. Psychological and personality assessments are incorporated when appropriate to clarify diagnoses, identify treatment barriers, and guide treatment planning.

A central focus of my work is prognosis and long-term outcomes. Together, we identify patterns that contribute to ongoing difficulties, develop effective coping strategies, and build practical skills that support lasting change. My goal is to help clients gain insight, improve emotional and behavioral functioning, strengthen resilience, and achieve meaningful improvements in their overall quality of life.

What you can expect from me

During the first session, clients can expect a welcoming, respectful, and nonjudgmental environment where they are encouraged to openly discuss their concerns, experiences, and goals for treatment. My primary focus is to understand each client's unique situation, including their emotional, psychological, behavioral, relational, cultural, and environmental factors that may be contributing to current difficulties. I recognize that beginning therapy can feel uncomfortable or uncertain, and I strive to create a safe space where clients feel heard, understood, and supported throughout the process.

The initial session typically involves a comprehensive assessment of presenting concerns, personal history, strengths, coping patterns, and areas of functioning. Together, we explore what has brought the client to therapy, identify factors that may be maintaining current challenges, and clarify what meaningful change would look like. Whether clients are struggling with PTSD, trauma, anxiety, depression, substance use, relationship difficulties, stress, or life transitions, the goal is to develop a clear understanding of their needs and establish a foundation for effective treatment.

Clients can expect a collaborative approach in which we work together to identify realistic goals and create a treatment plan tailored to their individual circumstances. I help clients gain insight into patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that may be contributing to distress while identifying strengths and resources that can support growth and recovery. By the end of the first session, clients often leave with a clearer understanding of their concerns, a sense of direction for treatment, and confidence that they have a structured and supportive process for moving toward meaningful and lasting change.
