Great to meet you!

About James L. Rossi, PMHNP-BC

I am a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with over 15 years of experience in behavioral health care. I provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and medication management for adolescents, adults, and older adults in a variety of settings, including outpatient care, inpatient psychiatry, crisis stabilization, and substance use treatment programs.

I earned my Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University, specializing in Psychiatric Mental Health, and my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Coppin State University. Before becoming a nurse practitioner, I worked extensively as a psychiatric registered nurse in inpatient psychiatry, detoxification services, partial hospitalization programs, and mobile crisis services. This background gives me a strong foundation in safety assessment, crisis intervention, and continuity of care.

I specialize in the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and co-occurring substance use disorders. I provide thorough psychiatric assessments, evidence-based medication management, and individualized treatment planning. My approach is trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and collaborative. I use validated screening tools when appropriate and work closely with clients to ensure they understand their diagnosis and treatment options.

My goal is to create a supportive, respectful environment where clients feel heard and empowered. I believe effective mental health care is built on trust, open communication, and a shared commitment to long-term wellness.

My approach to therapy

My approach is collaborative, direct, and grounded in authenticity. I strive to create a space where clients feel safe, respected, and genuinely understood. I am affirming and inclusive, and I work intentionally to ensure people of all backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences feel welcome in treatment.

I bring creativity into my work and tailor care to the individual rather than using a one-size-fits-all model. I believe therapy and medication management should be dynamic and personalized. I am also appropriately challenging—I help clients identify patterns, push beyond limiting beliefs, and take meaningful steps toward change. Growth often requires discomfort, and I support clients through that process with encouragement and accountability.

Humor and relatability are part of how I connect. Mental health treatment does not have to feel sterile or impersonal. I aim to be real, engaged, and present. At the same time, I maintain a strong clinical foundation rooted in evidence-based practice, comprehensive assessment, and thoughtful medication management when indicated.

Whether addressing mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, bipolar disorder, OCD, or co-occurring substance use, my focus is on helping clients build insight, stability, and long-term resilience. Treatment is a partnership, and I work alongside each client to develop a plan that feels practical, empowering, and aligned with their goals.

What you can expect from me

Your first session is focused on understanding you, your history, and your current concerns, and what you would like to change or improve. I complete a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, but the tone is conversational and collaborative rather than rigid or impersonal. My goal is to create a space that feels safe, affirming, and nonjudgmental from the start.

We will review your symptoms, mental health history, medical background, prior treatments, and any substance use concerns. I also take time to understand your strengths, stressors, relationships, and goals. If appropriate, we may use standardized screening tools to help guide diagnosis and track progress over time.

By the end of the first visit, clients can expect:

A clear understanding of initial diagnostic impressions

A discussion of treatment options, including medication if indicated

Defined short-term and long-term goals

A collaborative plan tailored to your needs

I am direct but supportive, and I welcome questions. My goal is for you to leave the first session feeling heard, informed, and confident about the next steps in your care.
