Great to meet you!

Karen was born and raised in Bedford, Pennsylvania, and has dedicated most of her career to serving the Western Maryland region. She obtained her Associate in Science degree from Allegany College of Maryland in 1995 and earned her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from American Sentinel University in 2017. In January 2024, she completed her Post-Master’s Certificate for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Karen currently has 30 years of medical experience.

Karen works as an Associate Professor of Nursing at Allegany College of Maryland. Most recently, she has worked with patients across the lifespan, but her passion lies in caring for children and individuals with special needs. She is passionate about helping others and aims to broaden awareness and treatment for patients with mental health disorders. Karen values a client-centered approach, listening to patients to provide individualized, empathetic care without bias.

Karen is married and has five children and five grandchildren. When not working, she loves to spend her free time with family and enjoying outdoor activities. She is also an animal lover and spends her days with her two golden retrievers, Max and Magi, and her Jack Russell mix, Lucy.

My approach to therapy

Karen blends clinical expertise with genuine empathy to deliver holistic psychiatric care across the lifespan. She conducts comprehensive evaluations, applies evidence-based screening tools, and develops personalized treatment plans that honor each individual’s unique needs. Her approach includes medication management, therapeutic support, and lifestyle counseling—always guided by respect, cultural sensitivity, and a deep commitment to each person’s mental health journey.

What you can expect from me

During a first visit with a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), patients can expect a compassionate, comprehensive evaluation focused on understanding their mental health needs. The session typically includes a detailed discussion of current symptoms, personal and family history, medical background, and lifestyle factors. Karen will likely use evidence-based screening tools to help clarify diagnoses and guide treatment planning. This initial appointment is also a time to establish trust, explore goals for care, and discuss potential treatment options such as therapy, medication, or lifestyle changes. Patients are encouraged to ask questions, share concerns, and actively participate in shaping their care plan. The overall tone is supportive, respectful, and centered on creating a safe space for healing.
