Great to meet you!

Psychiatric care should do more than reduce symptoms; it should help you understand what is happening, why it is happening, and how to move forward. I’m a board-certified psychiatrist whose educational background includes Duke University and Harvard Divinity School, and I have taught at the college, medical school, residency, and professional levels, as well as presented nationally and internationally on mood disorders, anxiety, PTSD, and trauma. Much of my clinical work has focused on trauma, addiction, and the often-complex intersection of mood, anxiety, life experiences, and substance use. I bring extensive experience treating individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric conditions, including people navigating recovery, major transitions, and periods when life simply feels overwhelming. My approach is collaborative, thoughtful, and evidence-based, with a strong belief that the most effective treatment begins by understanding the person—not just the diagnosis.

My approach to therapy

I want you to leave each visit feeling heard, understood, and clear about what we are working toward together. My style is warm, direct, and collaborative—I listen carefully, explain my thinking, and believe you should understand the “why” behind your treatment rather than simply being told what to do. We focus on practical goals that matter in everyday life, whether that means feeling less anxious, sleeping better, improving mood and relationships, strengthening recovery, or simply feeling more like yourself again. I aim to create a comfortable, nonjudgmental space where we can be honest about what is working, what is not, and adjust the plan together as life changes.

What you can expect from me

Your first session is a chance for us to understand the full picture—not just the symptoms that brought you in. We’ll talk about what has been happening, what you have already tried, your medical and psychiatric history, and what you would most like to change or improve. I’ll share my initial impressions, explain the treatment options I think make sense, and make sure you have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and weigh in. By the end of the visit, my goal is for you to leave with a clear understanding of our plan and why we are taking that approach.
