My full name is Kathleen, but my friends, colleagues, and clients call me Kat. Prior to completing my Masters of Science in Nursing through Walden University and achieving my Board Certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in 2021, I worked at the bedside for 20 years as a Registered Nurse in a variety of care settings that included long term care, home care, ambulatory inpatient care for medically supervised management of a variety of withdrawal syndromes related to substance use disorders, and most recently as a critical care nurse in a Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), both before and during the COVID pandemic. Throughout my bedside career, the inherent connection between mental and physical health has always been apparent to me, and working with people that struggle with substance use disorder helped me in making my decision to become a psychiatric specialized provider. I am passionate about psychiatry and assisting people in optimizing their mental health.
I am a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) with over 20 years of experience in behavioral health, hospice, and primary care mental health integration. Skilled in psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and intervention, I have worked with diverse populations including children, seniors, veterans, incarcerated individuals, and patients with severe mental illness. I excel at integrating the biopsychosocial model to deliver patient-centered outcomes and continuity of care.
I am a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) specializing in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry.
My clinical background includes experience in adult psychiatry and pediatric mental health, working with children, teens, and young adults navigating challenges such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood disorders, and school or social stressors. I use evidence-based medication management combined with psychoeducation, supportive guidance, and collaboration with therapists, schools, and families when helpful.
I’m drawn to this work because I genuinely enjoy connecting with young people and helping them grow into healthier, more confident versions of themselves.
After years as a woodsman, fisherman, emergency room nurse, and paramedic, I finally went to medical school, later than most, and already filled with life experiences. I live with my wife of forty years and have a wonderful collection of children and grandchildren. I love animals and all of the natural world.
Born and raised in a healthcare family, I grew up at the dinner table hearing about all things, medicine and healthcare. I went into the field on my own for the first time at 18 years old and have never left. My first degree is a Bachelor of Science In Applied Psychology. I then went and completed a Bachelor of Nursing followed by my Master’s in Nursing and my Post Masters Certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health. I have extensive experience working with children and adolescence as well as adults. I am an engaged active listener, and I excel at making sure patients feel comfortable and heard.

Headway makes it easy to find support for your mental health — from finding the right provider, to understanding costs, to scheduling with ease.
Finding the right psychiatrist in Maine starts with understanding what kind of care you need. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication, and manage ongoing medication plans. Psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) can also evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe medication. Both provider types are available on Headway. If you're looking for help with anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, or medication management, a psychiatrist or PMHNP may be the right fit.
Maine's size and rural geography can make finding a psychiatrist challenging, especially outside the Portland, Bangor, and Brunswick areas. Virtual psychiatry appointments expand your options significantly, connecting you with licensed providers across the state from home. When browsing providers on Headway, you can review detailed bios to learn about each provider's approach, specialties, and credentials before booking.
Psychiatric care in Maine can be costly without insurance coverage. Using your in-network benefits is one of the most reliable ways to reduce what you pay per session. On Headway, you can enter your insurance details to see estimated session costs before you book, and your out-of-pocket expense may be as low as $0 per visit. Nationally, Headway partners with over 100 insurance plans, making it easier to find a psychiatrist who fits both your clinical needs and your budget.
